and raised on the plains of Kansas, but he always liked to say with a smile, “I wasn’t born in Colorado, but I got here as fast as I could.” And, once he arrived, he never really left. After moving west to attend the University of Northern Colorado, Richard pursued a degree in education. It was there that he and his wife, Sheryl, began building both their life together and their careers as teachers. Over the years they taught in Greeley, Brighton, and eventually in the Poudre School District in Fort Collins. Richard later spent 25 years as an administrator at Putnam Elementary and Juan Fullana Elementary, dedicating his life to education before retiring in 1999. Long before retirement, the mountains had already captured his heart. In their early years, Richard spent nearly every spare weekend heading north to the quiet beauty of Gould. He hunted, fished, and wandered the endless forest trails, slowly falling in love with the rugged simplicity of the land. Eventually that love turned into a dream. Richard and Sheryl wanted to have a place of their own there. While building their first small cabin, they struck up a friendship with Johnny Anderson and his wife, who owned a nearby group of cabins known then as Ken Del Cabins. Johnny could see how much the pair loved the property, and when time came to sell, he went right to Richard and Sheryl. As it stood, in 1967, at the age of 35, they barely had enough money to finish the cabin they had started up the hill! So, naturally, Richard asked his dad, who, naturally said “heck no!”. Undaunted, he approached a good friend to go in on the property together. Richard and Sheryl took a leap of faith. With that leap, and a lot of determination, they purchased the 40-acre property that would eventually become the beloved Powderhorn Cabins. A few years later they were able to buy out the partnership and assume full ownership. Life brought changes over the years, and about eight years later Richard and Sheryl decided to go their separate ways. But, The Powderhorn remained something they had built together, and Richard continued carrying that dream forward. Cabin by cabin, board by board, he poured his heart into restoring the property. Through years of hard work and countless hours of sweat equity, he brought more than a dozen of the original cabins back to life. Carefully restoring each one to its authentic character and outfitting them with antique wood burning cook stoves that still glow warmly on cool mountain evenings. In those early days, the Powderhorn drew hunters, anglers, and outdoorsmen chasing trophy elk, monster trout, and the deep solitude of North Park. Over time, though, something even more special began to happen. As Richard raised his daughters among those same cabins and tall lodgepole pines, the Powderhorn slowly became a place where families came not just for the outdoors, but for the quiet magic of time together in the mountains. Decades passed, and generations of guests returned year after year. Children who once explored the woods outside their cabin doors eventually returned with children, and grandchildren of their own. Just three days shy of his 90th birthday, Richard passed away, leaving behind a place filled with memories, laughter, and the unmistakable spirit of the man who cared for it so deeply. In 2025, that story came full circle when Richard’s eldest granddaughter, Hallie, and her husband, Luke, purchased the property to carry his vision forward. With deep respect for the legacy he built, they are committed to preserving the character, warmth, and tradition that have made The Powderhorn special for nearly six decades. Today the cabins still sit quietly among the pines, much as they always have. While thoughtful updates. new mattresses, bedding, refrigerators, and sturdy metal roofs have been added over the years, the heart of The Powderhorn remains unchanged. Richard’s warmth, humor, extravagant stories/tales and love for this place still linger in the mountain air. Born and raised in Windsor, Colorado. She spent nearly every summer and Christmas’s in Gould with her grandfather, Richard “Gramps,” as she called him. From a very young age, he had her right by his side, helping out around the property. Cleaning cabins between guests and cleaning outhouses! (A true rite of passage). One of those traditions every kid in the family went through. It meant early mornings, doing things the right way, and learning that the smallest details mattered. Gramps had a saying he repeated often: “Our cabins are rustic, but they’re clean.” And he meant it. He was particular. very particular. About swept floors, tight hospital corners, fresh linens, mopped floors, and making sure every guest walked into a space that felt cared for. Those lessons stuck with Hallie and continue to guide how she and Luke look after The Powderhorn today. Those seasons shaped her. Long magical days exploring between cabins, the scent and sounds of pines whispering in the air, and evenings warmed by the steady glow of wood-burning stoves and open fire. For Hallie, The Powderhorn was never just a place to visit; it was home. In a deeper sense, where family traditions were built and her connection to The Rocky Mountains took deep root. Luke’s story begins a bit farther from the Rockies. He was born and raised in Miami, Florida. But, his path to the mountains started in the Florida Keys, where he met Hallie while she was on vacation. What began as a chance meeting quickly turned into something more, and before long, Hallie brought him back to Colorado to experience the place that meant so much to her. It didn’t take long. Once Luke experienced The Powderhorn, “Gramps” and, the quiet serene beauty of The Rocky Mountains, he never looked back. In March of 2025, Hallie and Luke stepped into a role that means far more to them than ownership. Taking on The Powderhorn Cabins was a way to honor Richard’s incredible legacy and continue something that has been part of Hallie’s life since she was born. Together, they are committed to preserving the spirit and soul of the place.
